Budget Buzz.......

Just a few hours and the suspense will be over!
The countdown had begun weeks ago....
The hows, the whos, the markets, the wallets, the masses, the classes....the talk is ON !!

Well, with the kind brouhaha created over the budget over the past few weeks, with any and every news channel airing something or anything and predicting, speculating, analysing with the different or same sets of experts, the BUDGET 2009 seems more to be a media circus and PR exercise than a statement of intent for the next fiscal in term of broad economic policies.

Never during our growing up years and thereafter have we been bombarded by such 'facts & figures' as has been the trend in the last few years! The crescendo has reached its peak during the current year when the tamasha has taken the minds of the junta by storm!

What we fail to realise is that the budget has never been full and final and can never be! And the government is at liberty to change, modify and introduce policies and taxes as per the need of the hour, throughout the year!

Well, as has been obvious in our present media-led society...the TRPs dictate...be it Ekta Kapoor's serials, T20 matches, Lakme fashion week or now.....Budget 2009!

So today as the day unfurls, We the People of India, will be glued to our TV sets, internet sites, watching, hearing, reading.... the BUDGET LIVE!!!!

PS:-Hats Off to the Marketing Guys....for successfully turning a serious matter into a Marketing gimmick, lapped up by us all

It was the elections before and now its the budget. But really looking forward to it, I used to like the budget speech by Dr Manmohan singh a lot.

Our finance people are getting ready to cut many planned budgets submitted on April. All these years in my office by this time on the exploration maps the green and yellow flags were pinned and movements of teams were ready. It looked like more of a Army general's office than a scientist. May be based on this year budget's exemption on infrastrues may give us some relief.

The spouse, who is a journo with the Times of India, will be super-busy today because of the budget. But I am too tired from last night's Wimbledon to catch the budget live!

@Sujata-I am reading it 'live' on rediff!!

@PradipKaku-We too are waiting for industry boosting announcements....sales has almost come to a standstill over the past few days, with speculation on budget announcement!

@Sucharita-Last night's Federer's win reminded me of your post and I was imagining how ecstatic you would be!!!!

I ENTIRELY AGREE TO WHAT YOU SAY!!! I DONT THINK THERE EVER WILL BE ANY CHANGE IN THE ATTITUDE OF THE PEOPLE. DAY IN AND DAY OUT WE ARE GETTING SWINDLED BY OUR GOVT.

The budget came and went...but honestly, did not leave me very excited.

Sharmistha Guha said...

@MG, Aparna-Quite a lacklustre budget.....no REAL change / reformist approach,no proper guidance to emerge out of the economic mess the whole world incl. India (to some extent) is in!

All the hype has fallen flat on its face....

The sentiment is being echoed where else, but the predictably unpredictable sensex!

don't know whether budget is a boon or bane for a salaried person like me... every time my eyes glitter with the announcement of income tax benefits... but alas!!... the income tax payment at the end of the year always increases phenomenally compared to last year!!!...

I am a bit late. The sensation part is over. But the media will move on to another'sensational'story that could be a judge's expose or rape of the maid or the faulty EVMs and the damage it did.Media can create a ripple even where there is none. The article written humorously brings a smile in the face

Ur analysis of the budget is dead right!! it is more of a TRP exercise done by the numerous channels..

I've never ever seen a budget [hangs head in shame]

I am watching True Blood instead. :D

@Kavi...The much maligned & pseudo pampered Aam Admi....give him an eyewash of a feel good factor...reduce his taxation level by peanuts and seal his lips and make him happy!!!! :)))

@HR-The PR guys & the news channel with their oh-so-serious talk make you feel it's a boon...actually it hardly matters doesnt it....throughtout the year the hiccups will keep being introduced and as you said, end of the F.Y you'll be left with a lighter bank balance!!

Sharmistha Guha said...

@KParthasarathiji-Yes yellow journalism is the order of the day...the more sensation and vain the news, the higher is the viewership...we the viewers are to be blamed equally for this...

@Saptarsi-Finally I could make you read and comment!!!

@Aniket-You have missed much ...
rather you've utilised your time better....gathering fodder for your next set of vampire stories!! ;))))

You know , when I first started working at 23, at Nariman Point, black and white TV's had just entered Mumbai, but the big Budget thing was about going to the CCI lawns to hear the late Nani Palkhiwala speak on it in the evening. No one sat with their noses to the TV.

No big hype, no guys arguing on TV, no Finance minister arriving at Parliament with sideys carrying bags like they were off on a trip, and no guys with instant analyses on TV. (That they are able to give instant analytic details about the Budget, makes me wonder just how secret and secure the preparation is.) Today its all about show, and very little about substance.

In the meanwhile, us junta types simply get on with a new IT form , more taxes than last year, less savings, and the government makes a huge fuss about 0.1 % change in something.....and coriander is Rs 12 a bunch .
